After having a conversation with a friend the other day and some contemplation, I wanted to share this quote that I believe sums up one foundational aspect of change. Willpower is something that is limited. We only have so much… and it isn’t a matter of if you’ll be in a situation where it is running low, but when. Willpower is a great tool; however, if you are looking to make a lasting change in life, look to change your habits instead.

Habits are routines and motions we go through without much thought. They are ingrained into our lives. However, they are malleable. We can change them if we go about it thoughtfully and purposefully. And the way to go about this is not by quashing them by trying to use willpower to quit them cold turkey, but rather, we should look to replace them with new habits that provide the same result that our body is craving.

For instance, let’s say I have a habit of stress eating. If I simply attempting to stop eating in this situation, it is going to be close to impossible to attain long-term. I might be great at it for a week or so, but it will almost inevitably return because it won’t provide me with the stress release I am craving. However, if I replace eating with taking a walk, drinking a cup of coffee, meditating, or journaling, I will get the desired result of a stress release. Purposefully replacing the bad habit with a new one will take time, but you will be much more successful!

If there is a habit you are hoping to change, try to dissect the habit. What is causing you to this habit? What are you craving? Search for a healthier replacement that provides you with the same result you crave. Replacement rather than attempting to completely cut out the habit is the key!
